Aerial optical cables are overhead fiber optic cables designed for outdoor deployment, including ADSS, Figure 8, OPGW, SkyWrap, and loose tube or ribbon types, each suited for specific network and environmental conditions.

Overview

Aerial optical cables are suspended from poles, pylons, or buildings to provide high-speed optical signal transmission over long distances and complex terrains. They are widely used in telecom networks, FTTx access, rural broadband, smart grids, and high-voltage power corridors. Compared to underground or duct cables, aerial cables offer lower construction costs, faster deployment, and adaptability to challenging terrains .

Main Types of Aerial Optical Cables

  1. ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) Cable
    • Fully non-metallic, self-supporting, and safe near high-voltage lines .
    • Features high tensile strength, lightweight design, UV and weather resistance, and spans from 50m to 1000m.
    • Applications: high-voltage corridors, long-distance overhead communication, mountainous regions, and lightning-prone areas.
  2. Figure 8 Cable
    • Cross-section resembles the number “8,” integrating a messenger wire for tensile support .
    • Advantages: easy installation, compact, cost-effective, and strong environmental resistance.
    • Applications: rural FTTx networks, short-to-medium distance links, cross-road or cross-river installations.
  3. OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) Cable
    • Combines optical fibers with a power system grounding wire .
    • Provides dual functionality: lightning protection and high-speed communication.
    • Applications: high-voltage transmission lines (110kV–800kV), smart grid monitoring, and backbone communication networks.
  4. SkyWrap Cable
    • Designed for retrofit installation on existing overhead power lines .
    • Minimal additional load, fast deployment, and increases network fiber capacity without disrupting electricity supply.
  5. Catenary (Messenger-Supported) Cable
    • Suspended on a steel messenger wire, with the optical cable attached via clamps or ties .
    • Mostly used in small-scale or reconstruction projects; less common than self-supporting cables.
  6. Ribbon and Loose Tube Cables
    • Ribbon cables: high fiber density, mass-fusion splicing, lightweight, and durable .
    • Loose tube cables: contain buffer tubes with multiple fibers, suitable for lashed aerial and duct installations, available in dielectric or steel-messenger designs.

  • Reel methods: stationary reel for obstacle-heavy routes, moving reel for unobstructed paths.
  • Hardware: dead-end clamps, tangent supports, and J-hooks ensure proper tension and slack management .
