How optical fibers transmit communication signals

Optical fiber transmits signals by converting electrical data into light pulses, guiding them through a glass or plastic core via total internal reflection, and converting them back into electrical signals at the receiver.

Signal Conversion and Transmission

Data begins as an electrical signal, which is converted into light by a transmitter using a laser diode or LED. Laser diodes are preferred for long-distance, high-speed transmission because they produce coherent, focused light, while LEDs are used for shorter distances or lower-speed applications . The light is modulated to encode digital information, typically by turning the light on and off to represent binary 1s and 0s, or by varying its amplitude, frequency, or phase for more advanced systems .

Fiber Structure and Light Propagation

An optical fiber consists of a core surrounded by cladding, with the core having a slightly higher refractive index than the cladding . This difference enables Total Internal Reflection (TIR), which confines the light within the core. When light strikes the core-cladding boundary at a shallow angle, it reflects back into the core rather than escaping, allowing the signal to travel long distances with minimal loss . Fibers can be single-mode, allowing one light path for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission, or multi-mode, supporting multiple paths for shorter distances .

Signal Reception

At the receiving end, a photodetector such as a photodiode absorbs the light and converts it back into an electrical signal using the photoelectric effect. This allows the original data to be processed by electronic devices .

Advantages of Optical Fiber

Optical fiber offers several key benefits over copper cables:

  • High bandwidth: Light frequencies allow transmission of vast amounts of data simultaneously .
  • Low attenuation: Signals degrade less over long distances, reducing the need for repeaters .
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Light signals are unaffected by nearby electrical noise .
  • Enhanced security: Tapping fiber is difficult and detectable . By combining these features, optical fiber enables high-speed, long-distance, and reliable communication, forming the backbone of modern telecommunications and internet infrastructure.
