Why Fusion Splicing is Recommended

This method is ideal for singlemode fibers, which are commonly used in B4 optical cables, and ensures long-term signal integrity in high-bandwidth or long-distance applications . Fusion splicing also supports both individual fibers and ribbon cables, making it versatile for complex network configurations .

Mechanical Splicing Considerations

Mechanical splicing aligns fiber ends within a housing using an index-matching gel, providing a temporary or semi-permanent connection . While faster and requiring less expensive equipment, mechanical splices typically have higher insertion loss (0.2–0.75 dB) and are less reliable over time, making them more suitable for emergency repairs, short-distance runs, or multimode fibers .

  • Temporary or emergency repairs: Mechanical splicing can be used when speed and low equipment cost are priorities.
  • Singlemode B4 cables: Fusion splicing is strongly recommended, as virtually all singlemode splices are performed this way .
  • Multimode B4 cables: Mechanical splicing may be acceptable for short-term or low-speed applications, but fusion splicing still provides superior performance.
