Burundi Power Distribution Box Installation Plant

Burundi is expanding its electricity distribution network through major public and private projects, including the Rubirizi substation and the Weza Power initiative, to increase access and reliability.

Key Distribution Infrastructure

Rubirizi Substation: The largest electricity substation in Burundi, located in Rubirizi, is a 160MV facility designed to increase the electricity-connected population by 7%. It is part of the Kamanyola-Bujumbura Interconnection Project, funded jointly by the African Development Bank and the European Union with $37 million. The substation will distribute energy from national power stations and serve as the injection point for the upcoming Ruzizi III hydroelectric station. Completion was scheduled for December 2024, with first household connections in early 2025, targeting 25,000 households . Weza Power Project: A new private-sector utility, Weza Power, was launched to provide electricity to nearly 70% of Burundi's population over seven years. Developed by Virunga Power in partnership with the Burundian government, the project aims to connect 9 million people, focusing on peri-urban and rural areas where electrification rates are extremely low. The initiative addresses reliance on kerosene, charcoal, and diesel generators, providing a modern grid-connected solution .

Power Distribution Box Installation

Distribution boxes, or substations, are critical for managing voltage, routing electricity, and ensuring safety in the grid. In Burundi, installation of these boxes is part of both public and private projects:

  • Public Sector: The Rubirizi substation includes multiple distribution points to connect households and businesses, improving grid stability and flexibility .
  • Private Sector: Weza Power is deploying distribution infrastructure across rural and peri-urban areas, including installation of distribution boxes to extend the grid to underserved communities .

Impact on Electrification

Burundi has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world, with only 12% of the population having access to electricity, and rural access as low as 2%. These projects aim to significantly improve access, reliability, and economic development by connecting households and businesses to the national grid . The combination of public and private initiatives ensures both immediate improvements in urban areas and long-term expansion into rural regions.

Summary

Burundi's power distribution expansion involves large-scale substations like Rubirizi and private utilities like Weza Power. These projects include the installation of distribution boxes and network infrastructure to improve electricity access, reliability, and flexibility, addressing the country's historically low electrification rates and supporting economic growth .
