Horizontal and Vertical Spacing

Support Intervals

  • Support Spacing: Cable trays must be supported at intervals specified by the manufacturer, typically every 4 to 6 feet for horizontal runs, with a maximum of 5 feet according to NEC guidelines .
  • Rung Spacing for Ladder Trays: Ladder-type trays should have rungs spaced 6 to 9 inches (150–230 mm) apart to support cables evenly and prevent sagging .
  • Support Methods: Common methods include trapeze hangers for ceiling suspensions and cantilever wall brackets for vertical runs . Supports must handle the weight of cables and external loads such as wind or seismic forces .

Cable Fill and Clearance

  • Fill Limits: Do not exceed 40% of the tray cross-sectional area for power cables and 50% for control or signal cables to allow proper airflow and prevent overheating .
  • Vertical Clearance Above Trays: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access .
  • Bend Radius: Ensure that cable bends are supported to avoid damage, especially in perforated or ladder trays .

Additional Considerations

  • Environmental Factors: Use sunlight-resistant cables and expansion splice plates for outdoor installations to accommodate thermal expansion .
  • Prohibited Areas: Cable trays should not be installed in hoistways or enclosed spaces and must remain accessible for maintenance .
  • Separation for EMI: High-power and low-power cables should be separated to prevent interference, and shielding can allow closer placement . Following these spacing and support guidelines ensures safe, code-compliant, and maintainable cable tray installations, reducing risks of overheating, mechanical failure, and electromagnetic interference.
