  • Fusing the fibers with an electric arc to form a continuous, permanent joint.
  • Protecting the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve to restore mechanical strength. This method produces very low signal loss (typically 0.02–0.1 dB) and minimal back reflection, making it ideal for long-haul networks, data centers, and mission-critical applications. Fusion splicing is particularly suitable for double-wire cables because it ensures both fibers are joined with high precision and stability, maintaining signal integrity across both channels .

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns the fiber ends within a small housing and uses an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap between fibers. Key steps include:
