Outdoor optical cables consist of a core, cladding, strength members, water-blocking elements, optional armor, and an outer protective jacket.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the cable where light signals travel, typically made of high-purity glass or plastic for efficient data transmission through total internal reflection. Surrounding the core is the cladding, which has a lower refractive index to confine light within the core and minimize signal loss .

Strength Members

Outdoor cables include strength members such as aramid fibers (e.g., Kevlar) or fiberglass rods to enhance tensile strength, resist stretching, and provide mechanical support during installation and environmental stress . Some designs also use steel wires for additional reinforcement .

Water-Blocking Elements

To prevent moisture ingress, outdoor cables incorporate water-blocking elements, which can be gel-filled tubes or dry water-swellable materials. These protect the fibers from water damage and maintain signal integrity in wet or humid conditions .

Armor (Optional)

Certain outdoor cables feature an armor layer, such as corrugated steel or aluminum, to protect against physical damage, rodents, and pests. Armor is especially important for direct-buried installations or areas with high mechanical risk .

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket is the final protective layer, typically made of polyethylene (PE) or flame-retardant materials like LSZH. It shields the internal components from UV radiation, abrasion, temperature extremes, and other environmental hazards .

  • Loose Tube Cables: Fibers are housed in gel-filled buffer tubes around a central strength member, suitable for aerial, duct, or buried installations .
  • Ribbon Cables: Fibers are arranged side-by-side in a flat ribbon for high-density applications, often used in long-haul or metro networks .
  • Stranded Optical Cables: Multiple loose tubes are helically wound around a central reinforcement, providing high tensile strength for long-distance trunk lines .
  • Micro Cables: Compact cables designed for microduct systems, offering high fiber density in a small diameter for space-constrained installations . These components and structural designs ensure that outdoor optical cables can withstand harsh environmental conditions while maintaining reliable high-speed data transmission over long distances.
