Before installation, review all project drawings, approvals, and specifications. Identify the cable route, including ducts, trays, manholes, and handholes. Ensure all necessary materials, machinery, and human resources are available, and implement a safety and environmental plan for the work area .

Handling and Offloading

  • Offload cable drums in an upright position in a clear, open area.
  • Use lifting equipment rated for the drum weight and lifting slings at a 45° angle. Avoid standing directly under lifted drums .
  • Keep the cable protected from mechanical damage, sharp objects, and extreme temperatures during offloading and storage .

Cable Storage

  • Maintain protective material on the cable until installation.
  • Store reels on flat, firm surfaces and secure them to prevent movement. Avoid areas prone to flooding or sharp terrain .
  • Respect the maximum storage temperature specified in the datasheet .

Pulling and Laying

  • Use a cable breakaway device to prevent exceeding the maximum tensile force, typically around 600 lbf for loose tube or ribbon cables .
  • Maintain the minimum bend radius: 20 times the cable diameter during pulling and 10 times during static conditions .
  • Use swivels at the cable end to prevent twisting.
  • Apply the pulling grip carefully over the jacket, ensuring it does not damage the core .
  • Lay the cable in figure-8 loops when deploying on the ground to prevent twisting, with loop sizes typically 2–4 meters depending on cable stiffness .
  • Pull the cable slowly and steadily, avoiding sharp turns, edges, or excessive mechanical pressure .

Installation in Ducts, Trays, or Manholes

  • Avoid pinching the cable against duct walls or tray edges.
  • Ensure smooth transitions at bends and corners.
  • Minimize mechanical stress at crossing points, especially for armored cables .

Post-Installation

  • Inspect the cable for physical damage and ensure proper placement in trays or ducts.
  • Document the installation, including splice locations, slack loops, and routing.
  • Maintain environmental protection and clean the cable ends before splicing or termination . Following these steps ensures that a 48-core optical fiber cable is installed safely, maintains signal integrity, and complies with industry standards.
