Distance between distribution box and wall

For concealed installation, the distribution box should be embedded with minimal gaps, typically around 20mm larger than the box dimensions, while surface-mounted boxes require a small air gap of about 6mm to prevent moisture damage.

Concealed (Embedded) Distribution Boxes

When installing a distribution box inside a wall, the reserved hole should be approximately 20mm larger than the box's length and width to allow proper fitting and plastering. The depth of the hole should equal the thickness of the box plus the plaster layer. The box should be fixed firmly, with no gaps around the edges, and the contact surfaces coated with anti-corrosion paint to ensure durability and safety (ZCEBox) .

Surface-Mounted Distribution Boxes

For boxes mounted on the wall surface, a small air gap of about 6mm (1/4 inch) is recommended, especially in damp or wet locations, to prevent moisture accumulation and corrosion. In non-combustible walls like concrete or tiles, the set-back should also not exceed 6mm (NEC 312.2) .

Clearance for Maintenance and Safety

Regardless of mounting type, ensure adequate working space in front of the box for safe operation and maintenance. NEC standards recommend a minimum clearance of 36 inches (914mm) in depth and 30 inches (762mm) in width in front of the panel, with the door able to open 90° . Side and top clearances should also allow easy access for wiring and inspection.

Wall-Mounted vs. Floor-Mounted Considerations

  • Wall-mounted boxes: Typically installed at a height of around 1.5 meters for easy access, with minimal gap to the wall for stability and protection.
  • Floor-mounted boxes: Usually have a sturdy base and may require more space around the enclosure for ventilation and component access . By following these guidelines, you ensure that the distribution box is secure, accessible, and compliant with safety standards, while preventing moisture damage and facilitating maintenance.
