Wiring Methods and Conduit Selection

All wiring from the fire pump controller to the motor must be installed using rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), electrical metallic tubing (EMT), liquidtight flexible metal conduit (LFMC), liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit (LFNC-B), listed Type MC cable with impervious covering, or Type MI cable. These methods ensure durability and protection against water ingress and mechanical damage, as required by NEC 695.6(D) .

Fittings used in these conduits must be listed for wet locations, and all connections at the motor terminal box must be made with a listed means of connection. Twist-on, insulation-piercing, or soldered wire connectors are not permitted .

Motor Terminal Connections

Motor leads should be connected using mechanical compression lugs (set-screw or crimp type) or split bolts. Each lug should match the number of motor leads, and torque values must comply with NEC recommendations. Anti-oxidant compounds can be applied to prevent oxidation and maintain low resistance at the connection points .

For multiple parallel motor leads, ensure that all lugs have the same number of barrels and that bolts are torqued correctly. Belleville washers can be used to maintain torque and compensate for thermal expansion differences between materials .

Grounding and Noise Considerations

Motor grounding is critical. The motor frame should be directly grounded, and if shielded cables are used, the shield should be grounded at the motor and controller using a 360-degree clamp. For unshielded cables, maintain at least 12 inches separation from other wiring to minimize electrical noise .

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure the wiring is continuous and survivable under fire conditions, as emphasized in NEC 695.12 .
  • Disconnects may be installed to create electrically safe work conditions, but the number and placement must comply with NEC 695.4(B)(1) and 695.5(B) .
  • Jockey pumps (pressure-maintenance pumps) cannot be fed from the fire pump controller and must have separate connections .
