To enable a Huawei optical module port, first physically install the module correctly, then configure the port to optical mode using CLI commands.

Step 1: Physical Installation of the Optical Module

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or gloves to prevent static damage to the module and switch .
  2. Remove the dust plug from the optical port and keep it for future use .
  3. Insert the optical module into the port with the gold fingers facing down, ensuring it clicks into place. Do not force the module; if it does not fit, turn it over and try again .
  4. Verify installation by gently pulling the module. If it does not come out, it is installed correctly .
  5. Check fiber compatibility: Ensure single-mode fibers are used with single-mode modules and multimode fibers with multimode modules .

Step 2: Configure the Port to Optical Mode

Huawei combo ports default to electrical mode, so you must switch them to optical mode:

  • For GE Combo Ports:
    1. Enter interface view: system-viewinterface <interface-name>
    2. Switch to optical mode: combo enable fiber
    3. To revert to electrical mode: undo combo enable fiber
    4. Apply the same configuration on the peer device .
  • For 10GE/2.5GE Combo Ports:
    1. Enter global configuration view: system-view
    2. Switch to 10GE optical mode: port combination-mode 10GE interface <interface-name>
    3. To restore default 2.5GE electrical mode: undo port combination-mode 10GE interface <interface-name>
    4. Note: This operation will clear current port configurations .

Step 3: Verify the Optical Module

  1. Check the port status: display interface brief to ensure the interface is up.
  2. Verify transceiver information: display transceiver interface <interface-name> verbose to confirm wavelength, received, and transmitted optical power are within normal ranges .
  3. Perform a loopback test if the port does not activate, connecting the fiber jumper to the same module to check for abnormal conditions .

Step 4: Troubleshooting

  • Ensure the optical module matches the port speed (e.g., do not use a 10G module on a 1G port), .
  • Confirm the port is not administratively down: display interface <interface-name> should not show Administratively DOWN .
  • Check for non-Huawei-certified transceiver warnings and ensure the module is supported . Following these steps ensures that the Huawei optical module port is physically installed, configured for optical mode, and verified for proper operation.
