How to use Huawei Optical Time Domain Reflectometer

Huawei OTDRs are advanced instruments for detecting, locating, and analyzing faults in optical fiber networks, including embedded solutions for cost-effective FTTH maintenance.

Overview and Functionality

Huawei Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) operate by sending short pulses of light into an optical fiber and measuring the reflected signals caused by Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflections. This allows the device to determine fiber length, loss, faults, and their locations, enabling precise line fiber quality detection (FD) in optical networks . OTDRs are essential for testing fiber-optic links in applications such as FTTH, LANs, metropolitan networks, and long-haul Internet backbones .

Huawei OTDR Modules

Huawei offers OSC (with OTDR) modules that combine optical supervisory channel (OSC) functionality with OTDR capabilities. These modules typically have two fiber ports for transmitting and receiving signals and operate at supervisory wavelengths such as 1491 nm and 1511 nm . When integrated with Huawei's Fiber Doctor (FD) system, these modules can continuously monitor fiber quality and detect faults efficiently.

Embedded OTDR (eOTDR) Technology

Huawei has developed an embedded OTDR (eOTDR) prototype designed for FTTH passive optical networks (PONs). This eOTDR can handle a split ratio of up to 1:64 and locate faults with an accuracy of within 5 meters . Unlike traditional OTDRs, which require external connections to the optical distribution network, the eOTDR is embedded in the optical transceiver inside the OLT, operating at the same wavelength as user data. This approach reduces maintenance costs and simplifies troubleshooting in large-scale fiber deployments .

Configuration and Usage

Huawei OTDRs can be configured on network interfaces to perform fiber fault diagnosis. Users can capture OTDR traces, compare them with a baseline “OTDR birth certificate,” and identify deviations indicating fiber faults . Commands such as otdr capture and display otdr capture history-record allow operators to perform tests and review historical results, ensuring proactive network maintenance .

Applications

  • Fault detection and localization in optical fibers
  • Line quality monitoring for FTTH, metro, and long-haul networks
  • Cost-effective maintenance using embedded OTDRs in OLTs
  • Integration with network management systems for automated fiber diagnostics Huawei OTDR solutions, including embedded modules, provide high-precision, scalable, and cost-efficient tools for maintaining modern optical networks, reducing downtime, and improving service reliability .
