Basic Working Principle of UPS Power Supply System

A UPS provides uninterrupted power by converting incoming AC to DC to charge batteries and then inverting DC back to AC, seamlessly supplying the load during mains failure.

Core Components and Their Functions

  1. Rectifier (AC to DC Converter): Converts incoming AC mains power into DC to charge the battery and supply the inverter with stable DC voltage during normal operation, ensuring continuous power flow to the load .
  2. Energy Storage (Battery or Flywheel): Stores energy in the form of DC power. During a mains failure, it immediately releases stored energy to the inverter, providing backup power for a short duration, sufficient for safe shutdown or transition to a standby source .
  3. Inverter (DC to AC Converter): Converts DC from the rectifier or battery back into AC with the same voltage and frequency as the mains supply. The inverter ensures that sensitive equipment receives a stable and clean AC output, often as a pure sine wave .
  4. Switch (Static Switch or Relay): Automatically switches the load between mains power and battery/inverter supply. In online UPS systems, the load is continuously supplied through the inverter, while in offline or line-interactive UPS, the switch engages only during power interruptions .

Working Principle

  • Normal Operation: AC mains power is rectified to DC, which charges the battery and feeds the inverter. The inverter converts DC back to AC to supply the load continuously, maintaining voltage regulation and filtering out spikes or noise .
  • Power Failure (Emergency Mode): When mains power fails, the battery immediately supplies DC to the inverter, which continues to provide AC to the load without interruption. This seamless transition prevents downtime and protects sensitive equipment .
  • Recovery Mode: Once mains power is restored, the UPS rectifier resumes charging the battery, and the system returns to normal operation. Bypass circuits or static switches may be used for maintenance or fault conditions .

Types of UPS

  1. Offline/Standby UPS: Supplies mains power directly to the load and switches to battery only during outages. Suitable for basic protection and small devices .
  2. Line-Interactive UPS: Uses an autotransformer to regulate voltage fluctuations and switches to battery during significant power disturbances. Provides better voltage stability than offline UPS .
  3. Online/Double-Conversion UPS: Continuously converts AC to DC and back to AC, providing uninterrupted, clean, and regulated power with zero transfer time. Ideal for critical systems like servers and medical equipment . UPS systems are essential for ensuring continuous, stable, and clean power, protecting equipment from outages, voltage spikes, and frequency instability, while allowing safe shutdown or transition to backup generators when needed .
