Understanding Surge Protection Devices

Surge protection devices come in three main types:

  • Type 1: Installed at the service entrance to protect against direct lightning strikes or major external surges.
  • Type 2: Mounted inside the main electrical panel or distribution board, providing whole-house protection against indirect surges and internal voltage spikes.
  • Type 3: Point-of-use devices, such as plug-in strips, protecting individual electronics like computers or TVs . For most homes, a Type 2 SPD installed in the main panel offers the best balance of coverage, cost, and ease of installation .

Tools and Safety Precautions

Before installation, ensure you have:

  • Screwdrivers, wire strippers, and a voltage tester
  • Personal protective equipment (insulated gloves, safety glasses)
  • Knowledge of your panel layout and breaker ratings Safety first: Always switch off the main breaker and verify no live current is present using a voltage tester. Even after turning off the breaker, test wires for live current before touching them .

Installation Steps

  1. Open the Electrical Panel: Remove the cover carefully and set aside.
  2. Mount the SPD: Attach the device inside or adjacent to the panel following the manufacturer's instructions. If exterior mounting is required, use conduit to protect exposed wires .
  3. Wire the SPD:
    • Connect the live wires to a dedicated double-pole breaker rated according to the SPD specifications.
    • Connect the neutral wire to the neutral bus bar.
    • Connect the ground wire to the grounding bus .
    • Keep conductor lengths short; ideally under 0.5 meters and never exceeding 1 meter to ensure effective surge diversion .
  4. Overcurrent Protection: Install an MCB or in-built fuse to protect the SPD. Ensure it does not rely on the utility's main fuse, which could disconnect the entire supply if triggered .
  5. Replace Panel Cover and Restore Power: Reattach the cover, turn on the main breaker, then the SPD breaker.
  6. Test the SPD: Check the indicator light; green or on means functioning correctly, red or off indicates a problem .

Maintenance and Compliance

  • Inspect indicator lights monthly and test with a multimeter or SPD tester.
  • Replace the SPD every 5–10 years or sooner if failure is indicated.
  • Ensure installation complies with local electrical codes and BS 7671:2018 standards for SPD installation .

DIY vs Professional Installation

While experienced DIYers can install a Type 2 SPD safely, hiring a licensed electrician is recommended if you are unsure. Incorrect installation can render the SPD ineffective and pose serious safety risks .
