Technical Requirements for Display Cabinets

Display cabinets must comply with standards covering safety, energy efficiency, materials, electrical integrity, and security, including UL 970, ISO 23953-2, and relevant glazing standards.

Safety and Electrical Standards

For retail and commercial display cabinets, UL 970 is the primary standard in the United States. It consolidates requirements from UL 65 (Wired Cabinets) and UL 962 (Household and Commercial Furnishings) into a single framework, covering electrified and non-electrified displays, including shelving units, kiosks, showcases, and temporary displays. UL 970 ensures compliance with the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70) and applies to products rated up to 600 V AC, suitable for dry, damp, or wet locations. It also provides guidelines for alternate construction, limited production, and retrofit kits, streamlining certification for manufacturers and buyers .

Refrigeration and Energy Efficiency

For refrigerated display cabinets, ISO 23953-2:2023 sets international standards for performance, energy consumption, and safety. It specifies testing methods, refrigerant types, and operational limits for commercial refrigeration systems. Modern condensers, including copper-tube/aluminum-fin and aluminum microchannel designs, must meet energy efficiency requirements, minimize refrigerant charge, and comply with environmental regulations such as the EU F-Gas regulation and DOE energy limits in the US. These standards also address the use of low-GWP refrigerants like R290 (propane) or CO2, which require higher pressure tolerances and enhanced safety certifications .

Materials and Glazing

For museum or high-security display cases, glazing must meet BS 6206 or equivalent European/International standards. Specifications often include water-white laminated glass to minimize color distortion, integrated protective films for conservation or security, and defined safe load capacities for shelves and panels. Framed cases are recommended for high-security applications, with edge covers typically 25–30 mm thick to resist attacks .

Key Considerations for Compliance

  • Energy efficiency: Ensure daily energy consumption meets regional limits and refrigerants comply with environmental regulations .
  • Electrical integrity: Cabinets must be designed to prevent short circuits, spark hazards, and comply with UL or IEC electrical standards .
  • Material quality: Glass, laminates, and structural components must meet optical, mechanical, and safety standards .
  • Security and load capacity: Shelving and panels should support intended loads and resist tampering or breakage .
  • Certification and labeling: Proper documentation and labeling are required for market access and regulatory compliance . By adhering to these standards, manufacturers, facility managers, and procurement teams can ensure display cabinets are safe, energy-efficient, durable, and compliant with international and national regulations.
