Standard Wavelengths

  • 850 nm: Used with multimode fibers for short-distance, cost-effective transmission. Multimode fibers have higher modal dispersion, limiting their range but making them suitable for small-capacity links .
  • 1310 nm: Used with single-mode fibers for medium-distance transmission. This wavelength falls within a low-loss window of single-mode fibers, balancing attenuation and dispersion .

Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM)

  • DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing): Uses tightly spaced wavelengths, often in the 1525–1565 nm range, enabling more channels and efficient use of fiber for long-haul transmission . These WDM modules allow multiple optical signals to coexist on a single fiber without interference, reducing fiber requirements and supporting industrial networks with high bandwidth demands.
