  • Optical and electrical interfaces: Connect the module to fiber optic cables and network equipment .

Types of Optical Modules

Optical modules come in various form factors and performance levels to meet different networking needs:

  • SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Supports speeds up to 1 Gbps, suitable for enterprise networks .
  • SFP+: Enhanced version of SFP, supporting up to 10 Gbps, commonly used in data centers .
  • QSFP (Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable): Supports 40 Gbps or higher, ideal for high-performance computing and large-scale data centers .
  • CFP (C Form-factor Pluggable): Designed for very high-speed optical communication links . Modules can also be classified based on modulation formats (NRZ, PAM4), wavelength division multiplexing support (CWDM, DWDM), and transmission distance .

Working Principles

  1. Transmission: Electrical signals enter the module and are processed by driver chips.
  2. Optical Conversion: The TOSA emits modulated light corresponding to the electrical signal.
  3. Propagation: Light travels through the optical fiber to the receiving module.
  4. Reception: The ROSA converts the optical signal back into an electrical signal, which is amplified and output for further processing .
