This method is efficient for extending networks, repairing breaks, or connecting multiple cable segments over long distances.

  1. Preparation and Safety
    • Set up a clean, stable workspace near the reels to prevent contamination and fiber damage.
    • Wear safety goggles and cut-resistant gloves to protect against glass shards and high-temperature fusion arcs (over 5,000°C) during splicing.
    • Use anti-static mats or wrist straps to prevent static damage to splicer electronics .
  2. Cable Handling
    • Carefully unroll the fiber from the reels, avoiding sharp bends or kinks that can cause microfractures.
    • Maintain proper tension to prevent stretching or breaking the fiber.
    • Use cable guides or rollers if the run is long to reduce stress on the fiber.
  3. Stripping and Cleaving
    • Strip the fiber coating using precision strippers appropriate for the fiber type (typically 250µm for bare fibers, 900µm for coated fibers).
    • Cleave the fiber ends with a high-quality cleaver to produce a flat, perpendicular surface for splicing .
  4. Splicing
    • Fusion Splicing: Align fibers in a fusion splicer and use an electric arc to melt and join the glass ends. This method provides the lowest loss (0.02–0.1 dB) and is ideal for permanent installations .
    • Mechanical Splicing: Align fibers in a sleeve or mechanical fixture. This is faster but typically has higher loss (0.2–0.5 dB) and is better for temporary or emergency repairs .
  5. Protection and Testing
    • Place spliced fibers in protective sleeves or closures to prevent environmental damage.
    • Test the splice quality using an OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) to ensure minimal signal loss and proper alignment .
