Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows network switches to deliver both data and electrical power over a single Ethernet cable to devices like IP cameras, phones, and access points.

What is PoE?

PoE is a technology that enables Ethernet cables to carry DC power along with data to powered devices (PDs) such as IP phones, wireless access points, security cameras, and industrial devices . This eliminates the need for separate power supplies, simplifying installation and allowing devices to be placed in locations without nearby power outlets . PoE is standardized under IEEE 802.3 specifications:

  • IEEE 802.3af (PoE): Provides up to 15.4 W per port, with 12.95 W guaranteed at the device .
  • IEEE 802.3at (PoE+): Provides up to 30 W per port, with 25.5 W available at the device, suitable for higher-power devices like PTZ cameras .
  • IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++ or 4PPoE): Uses all four pairs in the cable to deliver higher power levels, up to 60–100 W per port, supporting demanding devices such as high-end access points or video conferencing systems .

PoE Switch Modes

PoE switches operate in different modes to manage power delivery:

  • Endpoint Mode: The switch itself acts as the Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), directly supplying power to connected devices. This is common in modern PoE switches and allows centralized power management .
  • Midspan Mode: A separate device, called a PoE injector, is placed between a non-PoE switch and the powered device to inject power without affecting data transmission . This is useful for retrofitting existing networks.
  • Power Management: Intelligent PoE switches monitor power usage per port and can dynamically allocate power based on device requests using protocols like CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) or LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol). If a port exceeds its configured power limit or a fault occurs (overvoltage, short-circuit, or overtemperature), the switch can shut off power to protect the device and update the power budget .

Choosing a PoE Switch

When selecting a PoE switch, consider:

  1. Power Budget: Ensure the total available power exceeds the combined requirements of all connected PDs to avoid underpowering .
  2. PoE Standard: Match the switch standard (PoE, PoE+, PoE++) to the power needs of your devices .
  3. Port Count and Speed: Ensure the switch supports the required number of ports and data speeds (10/100/1000 Mbps or 1/10 Gbps) without affecting PoE delivery .
  4. Management Features: Managed PoE switches allow monitoring, remote power cycling, and prioritization of critical devices .
