How to form an 8-core optical fiber cable into a loop

To form a loop safely:

  1. Lay the Cable on the Ground Pull the cable out of the reel or conduit and lay it on a clean surface, such as a tarp or plastic sheet, to prevent dirt contamination. The cable should be arranged in a large figure-8 pattern, with each loop typically 6–12 feet (2–4 meters) in length depending on the cable's stiffness and diameter .
  2. Form the Figure-8 The figure-8 pattern introduces a half twist on one side of the 8 and removes it on the other, which prevents the cable from twisting or kinking. Each loop should be slightly offset from the previous one to minimize mechanical pressure on the fibers .
  3. Handling the Cable Use multiple installers to carefully pick up the cable and flip it over so the end to be pulled is on top. This ensures smooth pulling without introducing additional twists .
  4. Attaching to Pulling Equipment Attach the cable end to a pull rope using swivel pulling eyes or other appropriate connectors. Continue the pull slowly, maintaining the figure-8 orientation to avoid stress on the fibers .

Midspan Pull Considerations

For midspan pulls:

  • Place the cable reel at the midpoint of the span, ensuring the maximum pulling length in either direction is not exceeded.
  • Pull one end through the conduit to one side, then figure-8 the remaining cable on the ground before continuing the pull .

Additional Tips

  • Minimum Bend Radius: Always respect the cable's minimum bend radius to prevent fiber breakage.
  • Service Loops: Leave extra cable at termination points to allow for future maintenance or adjustments.
  • Storage: Keep reels on flat, firm surfaces and avoid sharp edges or flooding areas to prevent damage .
  • Safety: Avoid stepping on the cable and handle gently to prevent microbends or stress on the fibers . Using the figure-8 method ensures that your 8-core optical fiber cable remains untwisted, maintains signal integrity, and is easier to pull or store without damage.
