Material Selection

FRP trays are non-conductive, highly resistant to oxidation, and ideal for industrial or chemical settings, while coated metals provide mechanical strength with corrosion protection .

Planning and Tray Type

Before installation, plan the tray route considering clearance, load capacity, and cable separation. Choose the appropriate tray type:

  • Ladder trays: Excellent ventilation and support for power cables.
  • Perforated trays: Lightweight, suitable for smaller cables.
  • Solid-bottom or ventilated troughs: Provide continuous support for control or instrumentation cables .

Support and Mounting

Proper support is critical to prevent sagging and mechanical failure:

  • Support spacing: Typically 1.5 to 3 meters apart, depending on tray type and load.
  • Support methods: Trapeze hangers for ceiling suspension, cantilever brackets for wall mounting, or floor supports for horizontal runs.
  • Ensure supports are compatible with the tray material to avoid galvanic corrosion .

Cable Installation

  • Cable fill limits: Do not exceed 40% of tray cross-section for power cables and 50% for control cables.
  • Separation: Maintain separation between high-power and low-power cables to prevent electromagnetic interference.
  • Organization: Use cable ties or straps to secure cables neatly, leaving slack for expansion or future adjustments .

Grounding and Bonding

  • Metallic trays must be properly bonded and grounded to meet NEC Article 392 requirements.
  • FRP trays are non-conductive, so grounding is not required, but ensure metallic fittings or supports are bonded if used .

Inspection and Maintenance

  • Conduct a final inspection for alignment, secure fittings, and proper cable fill.
  • Routine maintenance should check for corrosion, loose clamps, or damaged cables to extend tray lifespan .

Compliance

  • Follow NEC Article 392 for permitted uses, cable types, fill capacities, and grounding.
  • Ensure trays meet NEMA VE 1 standards for load-bearing capacity and material quality .
