How Ambient Light is Detected

Ambient light sensors (ALS) are designed to measure the intensity and characteristics of surrounding light, enabling devices to automatically adjust display brightness, color balance, and other parameters for optimal user experience and energy efficiency . In modern electronic devices, photosensitive modules often integrate two light sensors with polarizers to differentiate between ambient light and light emitted by the display itself .

Photosensitive Module Design

A typical photosensitive module for full-screen displays includes:

  • First Light Sensor: Receives both ambient light and light from the display panel.
  • Second Light Sensor with Polarizer: Positioned with its optical axis perpendicular to the first polarizer, it only receives light from the display panel.
  • Polarizers: Ensure that ambient light is blocked from the second sensor, allowing accurate calculation of ambient light intensity by comparing readings from both sensors . This design eliminates the need for holes in the display panel, supporting full-screen designs while maintaining accurate ambient light detection.
