Materials and Tools Needed

To make an FC patch cord, gather the following materials and tools:

  • Fiber optic cable of the desired type and length
  • FC connectors compatible with the cable
  • Epoxy or adhesive for ferrule bonding
  • Fiber optic stripper to remove the cable jacket and buffer
  • Kevlar scissors to trim aramid yarn
  • Fiber cleaver for precise fiber cutting
  • Polishing films and puck for end-face finishing
  • Curing oven (UV or thermal) to harden the epoxy
  • Optional: Automatic cable cutting machine, dispenser, and defoaming equipment for higher production efficiency

Step 1: Cable Preparation

  1. Measure and cut the fiber optic cable to the required length, adding a small reserved length for handling .
  2. Strip the cable jacket using a fiber optic stripper to expose the buffer tube and Kevlar fibers .
  3. Trim the Kevlar with Kevlar scissors to prevent interference during connector assembly .
  4. Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove any residue .

Step 2: Connector Assembly

  1. Slide the boot and crimp sleeve onto the cable before inserting the fiber .
  2. Inject epoxy into the FC connector ferrule using a syringe, ensuring no air bubbles .
  3. Insert the stripped fiber into the ferrule until it slightly protrudes from the tip .
  4. Cure the epoxy in a UV or thermal oven according to the adhesive specifications .

Step 3: Cleaving and Polishing

  1. Cleaving: Use a fiber cleaver to trim the protruding fiber as close as possible to the ferrule tip .
  2. Polishing: Polish the connector end-face using polishing films and a puck to minimize insertion loss and return loss . Proper polishing is critical for signal quality.

Step 4: Testing

After assembly, test the patch cord for insertion loss, return loss, and continuity to ensure it meets performance standards. High-quality testing ensures the patch cord is suitable for telecommunications or data transmission applications .
