What is a fiber optic grating sensing device

A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor is an optical device that reflects specific wavelengths of light, enabling precise measurement of strain, temperature, and other physical or chemical parameters.

Structure and Working Principle

An FBG sensor consists of an optical fiber with three main layers: the core, where the Bragg grating is inscribed; the cladding, which confines light within the core; and the protective jacket, which shields the fiber from environmental and mechanical damage . The Bragg grating is a periodic variation in the refractive index of the fiber core, created using ultraviolet laser irradiation or advanced femtosecond laser techniques . When light travels through the fiber, the grating reflects a specific wavelength (Bragg wavelength) while transmitting others. Changes in strain, temperature, or other environmental factors cause a shift in this reflected wavelength, which can be measured to determine the corresponding physical change .

Advantages

FBG sensors offer several key benefits:

  • High sensitivity and precision due to direct wavelength encoding .
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for high-voltage or high-frequency environments .
  • Multiplexing capability, allowing multiple sensors along a single fiber using wavelength-division or time-division techniques .
  • Compact and lightweight, ideal for aerospace, robotics, and embedded applications .
  • Durability in harsh environments, including extreme temperatures, corrosive conditions, and radiation .

Applications

FBG sensors are widely used across industries:

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM): Bridges, dams, and buildings to detect strain and stress .
  • Aerospace and Automotive: Monitoring structural integrity and environmental conditions .
  • Industrial and Harsh Environments: Measuring temperature, strain, and chemical parameters in corrosive or high-EMI areas .
  • Biomedical and Environmental Sensing: Detecting physiological parameters or environmental changes .

Fabrication and Customization

FBG sensors can be fabricated on fibers with acrylate, polyimide, or metallic coatings, and packaged in flexible or rigid tubes for protection . Customization options include grating length, bandwidth, reflectivity, and array configurations for distributed sensing. Advanced fabrication methods, such as femtosecond laser inscription, enhance precision and allow operation in extreme conditions .

Limitations

Despite their advantages, FBG sensors face challenges:

  • Temperature-strain cross-sensitivity, requiring careful calibration .
  • High cost of interrogation systems for reading wavelength shifts .
  • Specialized fabrication and packaging may increase overall system cost . FBG sensors continue to evolve, with ongoing research focused on improving sensitivity, scalability, and long-term reliability for diverse applications .
