In the U.S., these include OSHA 29 CFR 1910.268 for telecommunications, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and the National Electrical Code (NEC/NFPA 70), which govern safe installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical and communication lines. Compliance with company-specific safety protocols is also critical to ensure a safe work environment .

Eye and Light Safety

Fiber optic systems often use infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye. Directly looking into a live fiber can cause eye injury, even if the power levels are lower than those used in laser surgery. Always verify that fibers are dark using a power meter before inspection, and wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles with infrared filters when working near active fibers . Avoid using microscopes without proper infrared protection.

Handling Fiber Glass

The glass core of fiber optic cables is fragile and can produce sharp shards. To prevent injury:

  • Wear disposable lab aprons and safety glasses.
  • Keep hands away from the face and wash hands thoroughly after handling fibers.
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of food and beverages.

Fiber optic installation often involves adhesives and cleaning solvents. Follow Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for each chemical, use solvents in small amounts, and ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and store flammable materials away from heat sources .

Equipment and Tools

Use appropriate tools such as visual fault locators, optical power meters, and fiber detectors to safely test and troubleshoot fibers without direct exposure to light. Fusion splicers and cleaving tools should be used according to manufacturer instructions, with proper eye protection .

Work Area Safety

  • Post warning signs indicating fiber optic work is in progress.
  • Ensure all personnel in the area wear safety glasses with side shields.
  • Avoid inspecting live fibers unless necessary and always confirm the fiber is dark before handling . By following these measures, technicians can minimize the risk of eye injury, chemical exposure, and physical harm while maintaining the integrity of fiber optic communication systems.
