Aiming at the characteristics of typical defects in the inspection process for optical fiber end faces, we propose a novel method, “difference of min-max ranking filtering” (DO2MR), for detection of region-based defects, e., dirt, oil, contamination, pits, and chips . Optical fiber end-face inspection and cleaning are important steps to ensure the quality of optical fiber communication. Since contamination or damage to the fiber end face can lead to signal attenuation, reflection loss, and unreliable connections, regular inspection and cleaning of the fiber end. Fiber optics is generally quite sensitive; tiny defects and even low levels of contamination on fiber endfaces can substantially degrade device and system performance. In fiber connectors, for example, particles or defects at the contact point can raise insertion loss, increase reflectance (reduce. A fiber optic end face inspection probe that includes a power control, an image control; a probe adaptor and probe end extending from a housing; an electronics module that includes a microprocessor, a memory and an optional wireless transmitter; and an autofocus camera system that includes a lens.
